A locally produced original musical comedy – “The
Adventures of Buckskin Jack: The Legend of the Fully
Grooved Axe” – is screening on Thursday, October 25th,
at 7 p.m. in the Prince Theatre of Chestertown,
Maryland.
The tall ship “Sultana” out of Chestertown, Md., is the
stage for two musical numbers of the low-budget SAG
film, which was shot in the Washington-Baltimore area.
The filming of one of the musical numbers "On The Sea"
caused much stir during The Down Rigging Weekend a few
years back so now all those curious onlookers may
finally enjoy the finished product.
"The film takes place the year 1710, a time of unbridled
greed and exploitation of the poor and uneducated. The
more things change, the more they stay the same," said
screenwriter-director Liv Violette, a graduate of Towson
State University who is now a Washington, D.C. area
movie producer. This is her first film, co-produced with
her Mike Violette, Thomas Nichols and Matthew Lee
Strickland.
Starring in the production is Shakespeare Theatre actor
Tony Roach, along with Dana Levanovsky from The Source
and The Forum Theatre in the Washington area. The film
also features Matthew Lee Strickland, now studying in
New York with The Upright Citizens Brigade.
The musical comedy tells the story of the “Robin Hood of
the American Colonies,” said Liv Violette, who also
wrote most of the lyrics. Washington area musicians
perform in the movie’s 16 original songs, which were
recorded at Cue Recording in Falls Church, Va.
"It's a love story about an infamous renegade who
attempts to leave his past behind him and live a
conventional life with his wife and her child,” she
said. “It all happens in a time when big money rules and
the little guy always loses -- that is unless the hero
Buckskin Jack comes to their rescue. With the double
identity of a feckless fop and backwoods renegade, he
mingles among the powerful and the down trodden with
ease. It's about might for right. Yes, it's another
story about a super hero -- but this one wears a full
bottomed wig during the day."
